At the end of September 2019, 24.52% of the persons registering for employment with Jobsplus (PES) sought mainly clerical work, whereas 16.01% sought work in the services sector.

Short overview of the labour market:

Employment situation – July-September 2019

In the third quarter of 2019: 

  1. The number of employed persons aged 15 years and over was 255, 297,or 59.7% of the population aged 15 years and over; 
  2. 8,879 persons or 2.1% of that same group, were unemployed (not working); 
  3. 163,547 persons or 38.2% of that population, were inactive.

In the third quarter of 2019, the estimated economic activity rate, which includes both unemployed and employed persons, stood at 76.4% of the working-age population. A comparison of the third quarter of 2019 with the same quarter of 2018 shows an increase of 0.3%. Persons between the ages of 25 and 54 registered the highest activity rate, with 87.6%.

Breakdown of the population in employment

Among the female working population, 36.7% were working in the sectors of public administration, defence, education, healthcare and social work; 22.8% were working in wholesale and retail, motor vehicle and household goods repairs, hotels and restaurants, and transport; and 11.7% were working in the professional, scientific, technical, administration and social services sectors. 

The majority of male workers, 28.2% were working in wholesale and retail, motor vehicle and household goods repairs, hotels and restaurants, and transport; 17.1% were in the professional, scientific, technical, administration and social services sectors, followed by 14.6% in manufacturing, quarries and other industries. 

Overall, the most common job category was that of professionals, accounting for 449,554 persons, or 19.40% of the working population. This category includes jobs such as doctors, dentists, pharmacists, engineers, teachers, consultants and others. 

Between July and September 2019, 220,871 persons or 86.5% of the working population, were employed on a full-time basis and 34,426 persons or 13.5%, were working on a part-time basis. The number of self-employed workers amounted to almost 15.9% of the working population.

The gross annual salary of employees was estimated at EUR 20,033 per year. This amount refers to the basic salary and excludes additional payments such as overtime, bonuses and allowances. On a sectoral basis, the highest average gross annual salary was recorded for employees in financial and insurance services, whereas the highest average salary for a main occupation was recorded among management administrators.

Breakdown of the unemployed population

Between July and September 2019, the estimated unemployment rate stood at 3.4%. The 25 to 74 year age group registered the highest rates of unemployment. From this total, 76.8% of persons had been unemployed for less than 12 months.

Hot jobs:

With the low unemployment rate in Malta (3.4% at the end of December 2019) all sectors are experiencing shortages of workers however the ones that are of most note are Fintech (including the emerging blockchain sector), Tourism, Healthcare, Engineering, Technical Professions, Gaming Industry etc.
