Staff Nurse 

Job Title:  Staff Nurse

Reports to: Home Manager/ADON/Clinical Nurse Manager

Job Purpose

The Staff Nurse will demonstrate proficiency in administering the fundamentals of the nursing process, contribute to nursing assessment and the development of a resident care plan and participate in the evaluation of nursing care.

To work alongside the Home Manager and Clinical Nurse Manager to insure the smooth running of the Nursing Home.

To assume responsibility for the provision of high standards of nursing and social care.

To deputise in the absence of the Home Manager /ADON./ CNM as required.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

• Supports nursing care standards through adherence to existing policies and procedures.
• Regularly attends review meetings and makes recommendations for improved resident care.
• Participates in peer reviews as appropriate.
• Obtains and documents nursing history from residents and/or significant others that is comprehensive of present condition and prior problems. Performs basic assessment of residents, indicating adequate knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology. Records vital signs, notes changes and pursues more specific investigations if needed. Identifies abnormal diagnostic data and shows fundamental i=understanding of its implications by reporting information to the Doctor and others caring  for the resident and by incorporating information in the residents care plan.
• To motivate staff by acting as an excellent role model, and to focus staff on

      resident care by fostering the ethos, values and philosophy we hold in FirstCare.

• To line manage a team of nurses & care staff.
• To participate in the induction of new staff.
• Meets with new residents to orient them to the services being provided, to identify needs and to suggest remedies to resident and their families.

Management

• Supervises care given by Nurses and Carer’s and provides instruction as needed.

Care

• To play an active role in the provision of direct nursing care.
• Reviews and develops care plans for assigned residents, Includes the resident and his or her family in planning care, establishes priorities and setting goals.
• To ensure that resident’s needs are met with dignity and respect.

• To promote resident’s independence and empowerment at all times.

• Uses Care Plans as a basis for providing safe and therapeutic care to residents. Communicates with the resident and his/her family and other members of the care team in carrying out the gaols of the care plan. Accepts accountability for clinical care of assigned residents including supervision of other non-clinical staff.

• Evaluates and notes the resident’s response to nursing care defined in the residents care plan and medical records.

• To ensure the management of medicine administration/ storage /ordering and control, is in keeping with FirstCare policy on Medication management.

• To ensure the residents nutritional needs are met.

• To ensure that there is comprehensive care planning records maintained for all residents in our care documentation.

• To liaise with resident’s Doctors and professional allied to medicine regarding their care.

• To ensure adequate stock and the appropriate use of clinical products.
• To participate in the management of complaints in keeping with FirstCare complaints policy.
• Liaise with resident’s relatives, keeping them up to date on the resident’s welfare.
• To participate in resident / relative meetings.
• To communicate appropriately with the Home Manager/ ADON/ Clinical Nurse Manager in unexpected events / incidences.
• To participate in the management of elder abuse cases in keeping with FirstCare elder abuse policy.
• Ensure that all procedures are carried out as described in the FirstCare policy manual.
• To ensure that resident tissue viability is managed in a proactive manner.
• To ensure resident safety through risk assessment and best practice.
• To ensure an adherence to FirstCare infection control process.

Communications

• To chair regular heads of department meetings and staff representative meetings with the care and ancillary staff teams.

• To take part in formal resident care reviews.

Governance & Risk Management

• To be familiar with the inspection procedure.
• To ensure regulatory compliance in respect of HIQUA standards, Fire, Health and Safety and Environmental Health.
• To keep up to date on current practices of Care for Older Persons.

General

• To act as an ambassador for the Firstcare Ireland brand at all times.

• To ensure confidentiality in respect of residents, staff and company business.

• Ability to prioritise tasks and to delegate them when appropriate.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and related software.

Education & Experience

• Eligibble for registeration as a  Nurse with the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland (NBMI) / An Bord Altranais.
• 3 years’ experience in Nursing.
