The Photonics Research and Innovation Flagship (PREIN) is a multi-disciplinary competence cluster focusing on the development of light-based technologies. PREIN is a national network of around 400 researchers, which gathers the cutting-edge expertise in Photonics in Finland, including Tampere University, University of Eastern Finland, Aalto University and VTT research center. PREIN is one of the 10 Finnish Flagships funded by the Academy of Finland. The Flagship programme is a northern fleet of excellent science, successful collaboration and solutions for tomorrow. Its rationale is to support future knowledge and sustainable solutions to societal challenges and seeks to advance economic growth by developing new business opportunities. Combining the resources and infrastructures of its partners, PREIN covers all the Photonics value chain, from fundamental research to applied research, seeding industrial collaboration, supporting mobility and career development.

PREIN develops light-based technologies for applications in life science, energy-saving, ICT, and environmental monitoring. The partners have complementary expertise and skills, ranging from the design and fabrication of nanomaterials and optical components to system integration and instrumentation development. Our research focuses on light field control, new materials and structures, and the development of light sources with tailored characteristics, all seeding to the development of novel technologies ranging from e.g. portable sensors, to LIDAR for environmental and industrial monitoring or smart photovoltaic modules for eco-efficient solutions. The Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences (ENS) is looking for Scientific Specialist and Communication Specialist for the Flagship.   

Job description 

Position 1: Scientific Specialist

The responsibilities of the position include:

  • Dissemination of the Flagship activities to the scientific community, industry and general public
  • Coordination and planning of scientific outreach activities
  • Coordination of researchers’ recruitments
  • Scientific reporting
  • Events and Workshops organization 
  • Management meetings organization  
  • The position may also involve development of our educational programs together with other PREIN partners

Position 2: Communication specialist

The responsibilities of the position include:

  • Coordination and development of the Flagship general communication 
  • Development of marketing and communication material
  • Responsible for PREIN communication channels (website, newsletter, Twitter etc.)
  • Representing PREIN in external events
  • Events and meetings organization
  • Main contact point for all administration and reporting duties

Requirements

We are looking for two versatile and independent persons with demonstrated evidence of organizational and management skills, excellent command of written and oral English, good communication skills, as well as experience in both independent project work and collaborative environment.  

For the position of Scientific Specialist, you should have at least a Master’s degree, but preferably a doctoral degree in a suitable field. A technical or research background in Photonics or Physics will be considered as an asset.

For the position of Communication Specialist, you should have a Master’s degree in a suitable field. Beside the excellent command of written and oral English, for Communication Specialist position also a good command of Finnish is required.

We offer 

Both positions are placed in the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences (ENS). The appointments are made for an initial duration of 16 months with a possible extension for four additional years. The positions will be filled as soon as possible. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.

Salaries at Tampere University are based on the job demands and the employee's personal performance in accordance with the University Salary System that applies to supporting staff. The preliminary job demand level for both positions is 9-10. In addition, employees receive performance-based pay. The initial salary for Scientific Specialist will be approximately in the range of 3600€-4400 € and for Communication Specialist 3400€-4100€. Link for salary scales.
