We offer a 1½ year Post Doc position at the Section for Terrestrial Ecology, Department of Biology, University of Copenhagen, with start 1. December 2015 or soon thereafter in the project OP-RICE-ING (OPtimization of microbial consortia for RICE culturING with a genetic algorithm, financed by the Danish Council for Independent Research DFF - 4002-00274).
Area of research
The increasing human population on our planet has resulted in an increasing need for agricultural products; preferably with less use of pesticides and fertilizers. Part of the solution to this problem is to optimize microorganisms in the plant root vicinity to maximally support plant growth. Different communities of soil organisms affect plant-health and plant-growth differently. Hence, to make plants perform optimally, we need optimized microorganisms. However, due to the enormous diversity that any soil contains, it is difficult to establish relationships between specific soil organisms and plant-health. In OP-RICE-ING, we focus on the optimization of microbial consortia. Engineered optimized microbial consortia are more efficient than single strains as the organisms co-function better. Our success criterion is microbial consortia that yield maximum plant growth and suppress pathogens. Further, the validation of the communities includes molecular analysis.
As Post Doc in OP-RICE-ING you will be part of a research team that addresses one of the major challenges in modern ecology; i.e. to understand, link and take advantage of the relations between plants and the soil-microbes that surround them. Further, in cases where we have pinpointed and cultured specific soil organisms or consortia, we need to establish their identity through sequencing. Thus your work will include complex microbial cultures; culture techniques, controlled plant growth, and next generation sequencing. We emphasize that good lab-skills are less than half of what makes a good scientists. A scientist must communicate results; therefore you must document good writing skills.
Hence, we search highly motivated individuals with the following qualifications:
1) An PhD in Biology or similar
2) Experience with scientific work
3) Documented ability to analyse literature-data and present them in oral and written English
4) A genuine interest in soil organisms and plants and basic skills in standard microbiological techniques
5) Experience with next generation sequencing of microbial communities
6) Collaborative skills
7) First-hand knowledge on statistics and data analysis
8) Ambition, fondness of hard work and aim for a career in science
How to apply:
Applicants are requested to submit their application electronically below including:
1) A letter of motivation for the application with statement of research interests
2) A curriculum vitae (max 1 page)
3) List of publications
4) Copy of Masters and PhD Diplomas and transcripts - other relevant certificates, including grades
5) Contact details of at least two persons for references
An assessment committee will be appointed to evaluate the applications. The applicants will be notified of the composition of the committee and the final selection of a successful candidate will be made by the Head of Department, based on the recommendations of the assessment committee.
