The Technical University of Denmark has an open PhD position for a project on visible light technologies for simultaneous communications and illumination. The project aims at studying the dual use of a visible light technology for dual use in communication and illumination.
Visible light technologies are emerging as promising candidate for providing simultaneously illumination and communications. Interest in visible light communication (VLC) is driven by the advances in light emitting diodes (LED) technologies and the need to find new spectrum resources for wireless communications. Advantageous features like geographical independent usage and cost effectiveness makes VLC and ideal candidate for simultaneous illumination and communications.
The application range of VL technologies can be expanded even further. Other applications that can benefit from VLC include indoor information and sensing networks, outdoor street information and sensing, ubiquitous three-dimensional positioning system, specific security and alarm networks, beam steering and imaging, among others.
The focus of this project is a study into the dual use of a new VLC technology for communication therefore with strong emphasis on data transmission and experimental tests.
The main topics the researcher will tackle within the project are:
•System requirements for VLC communication and channel modeling
•Set-up an experimental platform for VLC links
•Co-design and engineering rules for both communication and illumination
•Advanced modulation and data transmission schemes
•Innovation roadmap from research idea to product
The candidate must have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. A solid background of digital communications and signal processing is important, knowledge of photonics and fiber optics is an advantage. Good communication skills in written and spoken English is a must. Incorporation date is spring 2015.
Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, only candidates with an above the average marks are accepted in the program. We recommend the applicants to contact the supervisors in advance to assess the suitability of the application.

The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current Danish rules for Ph.D. degree researchers. The period of employment is 3 years.
