Coimbra is one of the oldest and most influent cities of the country in the University History, known as the City of Knowledge and the Students City. With more than 50.000 higher education students, being a base of the knowledge in Portugal, sheltering one of the oldest and prestigious universities from Europe.
The University of Coimbra, Alta and Sofia was inscribed in UNESCO’s World Heritage sites in June 2013. According to the World Heritage Committee, "Coimbra offers an outstanding example of an integrated university city with a specific urban typology as well as its own ceremonial and cultural traditions that have been kept alive through the ages. The University’s edifices became a reference in the development of other institutions of higher education in the Portuguese-speaking world where it also exerted a major influence on learning and literature."
