The Klinikum Augsburg is currently in a process which is unique to the health policy in Germany. As of January 1, 2019, the Free State of Bavaria will take over the Augsburg Hospital, which will then become a university clinic focusing on Environmental Health Sciences and Medical Information Sciences (environmental medicine and medical informatics). At present, the Klinikum Augsburg is a maximum care hospital and academic teaching hospital of the Ludwig-Maximilian-University München with 24 clinics / 1,737 beds, three institutes and 18 medical centers still under municipal ownership. Every year around 243,000 in- and outpatients are cared for at Klinikum Augsburg. Last year, 2249 children were born here, amongst them numerous multiple pregnancies. In addition, Klinikum Augsburg is the largest training provider for health care professionals with about 560 training slots in the region.
